Internship Program

Fourth Economy believes in supporting the next generation of leaders through our internship programs. We are looking for creative and driven individuals who want to learn while working directly on real-world projects.

We make an effort to assign interns to work on projects that fit with their interests and skill sets. However, because we are a small and dynamic firm, interns are expected to be flexible and have general research and writing skills.

Internship Positions

 

WHO

Open to graduate students and recent graduates with a focus in applied economics, data analytics, statistics, public policy, business, human centered design, project management or planning preferred. 

 

WHAT

Fourth Economy is looking for motivated research and data analysts with interests in: 

  • Redevelopment strategies for small post-industrial communities

  • Development of regional strategies and consensus building around a better economy and quality of place

  • Neighborhood business district development

  • Resilience of and climate change impacts on community and economic development

  • Public/private partnership models for social impact and investing

  • Economic recovery and resilience strategies

RESEARCH ANALYST INTERNSHIP

Research Analyst work includes interviewing stakeholders, research, benchmarking, data analysis, preparing presentations, taking meeting notes, and drafting memos. Though Research Analysts will be assigned to help with particular projects, they may be asked to assist with smaller tasks for other projects. Research Analysts will also be given the opportunity to participate in other meetings or events that match their interests when appropriate. 

 

Research Analysts required skills:
  • Ability to interview a wide range of community leaders and advance their input in planning activities

  • Public engagement experiences or other meetings leadership strengths

  • Ability to perform desktop research with a critical eye to what information will help with our client work

  • Strong writing skills to summarize information, interpret data to compelling narratives and convey messages to wide audiences

DATA ANALYST INTERNSHIP

Data Analysts will work with analytics staff at Fourth Economy to collect and analyze various economic and demographic data to provide insights for clients, focusing on specific topic areas. The Data Analysts will be given a project plan with goals and expectations, but the work will require the analyst to take initiative and flex their problem-solving skills.

Data Analyst required skills:
  • Basic programming ability, preferable in R or Python, and/or an advanced level of proficiency with spreadsheet software and other analytical tools will be needed

  • Familiarity with public data sets like Census, BLS, and BEA; Using APIs to access data is a plus

  • An understanding of common concepts in statistics and economics is important

  • Data visualization skills and experience is beneficial, and if candidates are interested in visualization work, there is potential to incorporate data visualizations into the project deliverables

Some candidates may be able to straddle these two roles!

Ideal candidates will be motivated, eager to dive into challenging problems, and passionate about making an impact with our partners and the communities they serve. In addition to project work, all Analysts are invited to write blog posts on a relevant topic of their choosing. WHEN

Fourth Economy has an ongoing need for research and data analysts. We generally require that interns be able to work 20 to 40 hours per week. The position is flexible in terms of hours, and we are eager to work around an academic schedule. Analysts meet regularly with supervisors and collaborate with all staff.

Positions are located in our Pittsburgh, PA Office OR fully remote. Office hours are EST

We offer a competitive wage rate for our analysts that is based on experience and ability to contribute.
