Fourth Economy believes in supporting the next generation of leaders through our internship programs. We are looking for creative and driven individuals who want to learn while working directly on real world projects.

We make an effort to assign interns to work on projects that fits with their interests and skill sets. However, because we are a small and dynamic firm, interns are expected to be flexible and have general research and writing skills.

Fall 2019 Research Associate Internship Program

Who: Open to graduate students or recent graduates. Area of focus in applied economics, business, human centered design, public policy, project management, planning or marketing preferred.

What: Fourth Economy will assign Research Associates to work on projects that fit with their interest and skill set. For Fall 2019, we are looking for candidates interested in:

  • Redevelopment strategies for small post-industrial communities
  • Neighborhood business district development
  • Resilience of and climate change impacts on community and economic development
  • Non-profit strategic planning
  • Public/private partnership models for social impact and investing

In general, Research Associate tasks include interviewing stakeholders, research, benchmarking, data analysis, preparing presentations, taking meeting notes, and drafting memos. Though Research Associates will be assigned to help with particular projects, they may be asked to assist with smaller tasks for other projects. Research Associates will also be given the opportunity to participate in other meetings or events that match their interests when appropriate. When: Fourth Economy is seeking Research Associates for Fall 2019 to work 15-20 hours per week. Though we offer flexible schedules, we do demand reliability. We are a small firm, often working on tight deadlines, and need to be able to count on Research Associates fulfilling the time commitments to which they’ve agreed.

Where: Our office is located in Pittsburgh’s Chateau neighborhood. We serve a national client base so some travel may be required.

Fall 2019 Data Analytics Internship Program

Who: Open to graduate students and recent graduates (and possible high-achieving undergraduates with programming skills). Area of focus in data analytics, economics, business, public policy, statistics, machine learning, or other related fields.

What: The Analytics Associate will work with analytics staff at Fourth Economy to develop and refine specific methods that our firm plans to use throughout our work with clients. In a nutshell, the associate will use various economic and demographic data to provide insights for clients, focusing on specific topic areas. The associate will be given a project plan with goals and expectations, but the work will require the associate to take initiative and flex their problem solving skills. We are looking for candidates interested in:

  • Data analytics
  • Data visualization
  • Web scraping
  • Database management

Ideal candidates will be motivated, eager to dive into challenging problems, and passionate about making an impact with our partners and the communities they serve. Skills Required:

  • Programming ability, preferable in R or Python, is needed. (The associate need not be a R/Python wizard, but at least a basic fluency will be necessary.)
  • Data scraping & cleaning experience would be ideal, but eagerness to learn will do the trick!
  • Familiarity with public data sets like Census, BLS, and BEA. Using APIs to access data is a plus.
  • An understanding of common concepts in statistics and economics will be helpful.
  • Data visualization skills and experience is beneficial, and if candidates are interested in visualization work, there is potential to incorporate data visualizations into the project deliverables.
  • Eagerness to write about topics in the realm of economics and community development would also be a big asset.

When: Fourth Economy is seeking analytics associates for Fall 2019 to work up to 20 hours per week. Candidates who can begin in August and continue through the Fall Semester are encouraged to apply. The position is flexible in terms of hours, and we are eager to work around an academic schedule. The associate will have regular meetings with supervisors at our office.
