Exploring America’s Best: 2024 Placemaking Review

Over the past year, my travels for client work have taken me to cities and regions across the country, where I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of creative placemaking. This work isn’t just about building spaces—it’s about creating opportunities for people to connect, celebrate their culture, and find pride in their communities.

From bustling festivals and reimagined public parks to innovative art initiatives and economic development projects, these examples of placemaking reveal what’s possible when communities invest in collaboration, creativity, and shared purpose. Here’s a look at five inspiring places that demonstrate why placemaking is essential to fostering meaningful engagement and vibrant, resilient communities.

Buffalo, New York: Celebrating Musical Heritage

Buffalo's dedication to honoring its musical roots was evident at the 20th Annual Funk Fest, held from August 23 to 25, 2024, at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. This festival paid tribute to the legendary Rick James, a Buffalo native, and featured performances by local artists, including the Rick James Legacy Band and saxophonist Will Holton. The event celebrated funk music and fostered community unity and pride.

In addition to Funk Fest, Buffalo is enhancing its public spaces with the new Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation Park, a transformative project designed to bring people together through accessible green spaces, play areas, and community events. This park reflects the city’s commitment to creating spaces that foster connection and well-being.

Buffalo has also revitalized its waterfront by developing Canalside, a vibrant destination offering concerts, festivals, and recreational activities that draw residents and visitors alike. This transformation has reconnected the community with its maritime heritage while providing a dynamic public space celebrating Buffalo's history and future.

Furthermore, the Northland Workforce Training Center equips residents with the skills needed for advanced manufacturing and clean energy careers, driving economic development and deepening community engagement. These initiatives collectively highlight Buffalo's dedication to building a more connected and thriving community.

Placemaking is about creating opportunities for people to connect, celebrate their culture, and find pride in their communities.

Cleveland, Ohio: Reforesting the Forest City

Cleveland is actively working to restore its historic "Forest City" identity through urban reforestation. The Cleveland Tree Coalition, a collaboration of over 50 organizations, has been instrumental in these efforts. In October 2024, the Coalition granted over $600,000 to 13 local agencies to plant more than 500 trees across various neighborhoods, aiming to increase the city's tree canopy from 19% to 30% by 2040.

Additionally, the city's "Reforest City" initiative focuses on underserved neighborhoods to improve air quality and provide shade, enhancing residents' quality of life.

Cleveland's Metroparks system has also expanded green spaces and trails, offering residents accessible recreational opportunities and promoting environmental stewardship.

Southeastern Michigan: Fostering Creative Industries

In Lansing, the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) has been pivotal in promoting the creative tech sector, particularly esports. By supporting esports companies, LEAP drives economic growth and positions the region as a leader in this emerging industry.

LEAP has also advanced to the next phase of a $3.5 million grant aimed at boosting entrepreneurship in the tri-county region, supporting small businesses disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Phoenix, Arizona: Integrating Art into Daily Life

Phoenix's vibrant community engagement extends beyond its arts scene to innovative technologies that shape daily life. Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company, has become a significant part of the city’s landscape, offering residents a glimpse into the future of transportation while supporting sustainable and accessible mobility options.

The city's diverse culinary landscape is another highlight, with establishments like Thai Basil serving as community gathering spots. Known for its authentic dishes and warm atmosphere, Thai Basil reflects Phoenix's rich cultural tapestry and commitment to celebrating diversity.

The Roosevelt Row Arts District continues to shine with its First Fridays, a monthly art walk featuring local artists and musicians. This beloved tradition fosters community, supports the local arts scene, and showcases Phoenix as a city where creativity thrives.

Western New York: Enhancing Visitor Experience

The Niagara Falls region has bolstered its appeal through the establishment of a new welcome center, offering visitors insights into local attractions and history. The local art community contributes to the area's cultural richness with galleries and public art installations celebrating the region's heritage and creativity.

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center provides an immersive experience of the region’s history, fostering a deeper understanding of its cultural significance.

Additionally, the Artpark in nearby Lewiston hosts concerts and art installations, serving as a cultural hub for residents and visitors.

Let's Build Vibrant Communities Together

From Buffalo’s musical heritage to Phoenix’s artistic traditions and Cleveland’s reforestation efforts, these places share a common thread: they invest in their unique assets to foster connection, pride, and opportunity. What’s remarkable is how each city leverages its history, culture, and people to create authentic and forward-looking spaces.

The successes I’ve witnessed are rooted in collaboration. Whether it’s community-led projects, public-private partnerships, or grassroots initiatives, these cities are finding ways to align resources and vision for maximum impact. Importantly, these examples are not one-off achievements; they represent replicable strategies that any community can adapt to its needs.

These experiences demonstrate that creative placemaking is more than just enhancing physical spaces—it’s about sparking a sense of belonging and purpose. When communities come together to reimagine their spaces, they create ripple effects that boost local economies, strengthen social ties, and elevate the overall quality of life.
